The Shiawassee Conservation Association (SCA) was organized in 1907 in a tent on the corner of Washington and Comstock Streets in Owosso, Michigan. The SCA is the oldest such group in the country. It has always stood for conservation of natural resouces and good sportsmanship.
The SCA was the founding site of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) when in 1937 thirty-five other conservation groups joined with the SCA to form the MUCC. The SCA facilities served as the MUCC offices from 1937 until 1987.
The unique club house and first permanent home of the Shiawassee Conservation Association was built in 1926 and stands as a monument to the great American conservationsist, famed author and Owosso citizen, the late James Oliver Curwood. Mr. Curwood personally donated the land and provided matching funding to build the club house.
Curwood also spent a great deal of his time supporting the cause that the SCA represents: to educate the public about conservation; to conserve our natural resources including air, soil and minerals, forests, waters and wildlife; and to promote good sportsmanship.
